Strip Church

As some of you may be aware, I have a long time friend from college named Craig Gross. He is the founder of a ministry called www.XXXCHURCH.com. I really respect and appreciate Craig’s drive and passion for reaching those that are lost in sin, sex & porn – people who are not experiencing the full blessing of life that God intended [confessions]. If you don’t know much about their ministry, I would really encourage you to read up — NO, there is not porn on their site. Craig is one of a small handful of leaders that I respect for his guts to  walk into territories where others put him down, make fun of him and even harass & mock him through national media outlets as he brings love and light into the darkness — not many of us really experience this kind of rejection for our faith in Christ.

Interestingly (and with much disappointment in our fellow believers), Craig gets attacked from both sides of the fence. Many ultra-conservative Christians jump on his case accusing him of not preaching enough Jesus, for somehow supporting the industry through awareness, of turning kids to porn through talking about it and there are a whole host more of unintelligent, uninformed clichés that they use while they are steeped in fear to stand live up for Christ in even the most basic of ways. It seems there are many Christians who don’t have a clue about those who are lost in sex addiction, in the industry or both. To top it off they also attack Craig & XXXChurch with the same venom that you might only reserve for the murderer of a loved one.

The new frontier for Craig & XXXChurch is planting a church in Vegas on the strip. While not my city and not my missional calling, I am behind the initiative.  Why?  Because everyone vacations or does business in Vegas (over 40 million people last year) but no one does church on the strip. No one has a credible & significant initiative to reach people on the strip right before an addictive lifestyle begins or to touch them with grace as they are overwhelmed with guilt and consequence immediately following poor choices that ‘happen in vegas’ but we know won’t ’stay in vegas’. For our friends and family, I want to encourage you to consider doing 2 things to support this one of a kind ministry:

  1. Support it financially (and ask your church to also)  DONATE |  INFO
  2. Share it with a friend using your credibility, blogs, facebook, myspace & email (nothing beats viral marketing)

Maryland – week 1

We arrived Father’s Day evening to Frederick, MD after a long drive from Gatlinburg. The boys were extremely well behaved for the majority of the drive.  We pulled into the ever so lovely Evergreen Point Village and quickly decided the park was not for us (I should have guessed it when I didn’t see any pictures on the website.) So we parked for 2 nights @ Katie & CJ’s house then learned that their homeowners association would not allow it.  Katie has a friend with lots of property so we parked the trailer on the side of her house.  Thank you, Joy!! And so, we’ve been relegated to the basement.  Actually, it’s a super nice basement with a futon bed for Ryan & I and a comfy sleeping bag covered floor for the boys.

Wednesday, Ryan left for Michigan to spend time with a friend of his from college who started xxxchurch.com.  He’s spending time with him & his ministry for some of the ’study’ part of his leave. Today they are heading to Sacramento to connect with another friend/pastor. He returns Wednesday.

Katie, Owen, the boys & I took a picnic lunch to the park on Thursday, then the boys played at the playground, made new friends and rode their bikes.  Friday we ventured out and took the Metro to the National Zoo in DC.  It was quite the adventure – I think we thoroughly exhausted poor little Owen. But, we had lots of fun. The whole time we were riding the train I had this song stuck in my head:

We’ve been doing a lot of hanging out and playing at the park.  The boys have learned how to destroy Worms on the PlayStation and are enjoying the Disney Channel that we don’t often get in the trailer.

We went to church with the Fays Sunday morning to Monocacy Valley Church where I would have never guessed to see Randy Stonehill & Mike Pachelli leading a special worship service.  It was quite the trip down memory lane as they started the service with this song:

which Randy wrote with Keith Green.  And toward the end of the service they played a very original version of:

Last night the boys & I stayed out late on our date to Target & McDonald’s.  We bought a Slip ‘N Slide and water balloons to cool off with today.  We miss Ryan and we’re looking forward to Wednesday.  Pictures to follow soon.

…I know the title is cheezy – Ryan made me do it.  :)

I feel like I should write about shopping or something girly since you’ve already had to read not one or two, but three posts recently on mountain biking.  But, we’ve only been shopping a couple of times on this trip and I haven’t found anything too spectacular except, of course, for the ‘stunning’ black dress Sarah helped me pick out at a consignment shop at the Factory at Franklin (stunning being her word, not mine.) Not sure when I’ll get to wear it, but I couldn’t pass up the great deal.

So, my thoughts are similar to Ryan’s on Tennessee…I really enjoyed it and I think the boys did as well.  (In fact, the other day Jackson said to me, “Thanks Mom, for letting us come to Tennessee & spend so much time with our cousins.”)  We had planned to spend 4 nights at our campground near Nashville, but we liked it so much that we stayed for 7 instead.  It’s very green which is certainly lovely, but I guess if you want green you also have to deal with the bugs and humidity – not so lovely.  As opposed to Arkansas, we could see ourselves living here if only it weren’t for the fact that everyone already seems to be saved and churches are a dime a dozen.  Anyhow, here’s my summary of Tennessee highlights…

©    I didn’t dislike Memphis as much as Ryan – it wasn’t my favorite part of Tennessee since I’m not much of an Elvis fan, but it was still enjoyable.  We had fun exploring the city as well as swimming in the small yet refreshing pool at the Graceland RV Park.  I think my favorite was the Peabody Ducks – I even found a children’s book about them at a used bookstore in Nashville.  It’s very cute!

©    The best thing about Tennessee = the LeJeune’s! It was lots of fun to spend so much time with my sister, Diane and her family.  The boys saw Kung Fu Panda, played tennis, and hung out with their cousin Jesse.  Ryan & I toured downtown Nashville during the CMA festival with Sarah & Billy. (Hence the photos of hillbilly boy & mostly naked cowboy – BTW, you have to pronounce that as necked.)  We took in part of Beau’s baseball game after visiting their church Sunday, which was fun to watch but super HOT that day.  Sarah gave us a tour of downtown Franklin. And we watched some of her dress rehearsal for the Music Man at the Renaissance Center (she’s so talented – check out this article to prove it.) And, did I mention I crushed Diane & Beau at canasta?  We shared many meals (accompanied by the all important sweet tea) and good conversation…an all-around GREAT visit.

©    Gatlinburg is a tourist trap x 10! It reminded me of a huge version of the old time carnival areas of Knott’s Berry Farm – candy stores, mini-golf, cartoon portraits, airbrushed t-shirts and funnel cake galore.  (Not that there’s anything wrong with funnel cake, mind you.) But, we found a nice campground a few miles east of the craziness where we could relax and have some fun with the boys.  They had a long waterslide and a nice pool that we all enjoyed.  We also drove through the Roaring Fork historic nature trail of the Smokey Mountains that was beautiful.

Even though its Father’s Day let me reassure ya’ll that ‘Mom’ is doing just fine.  I know some of you may be concerned about how I’m faring on this adventure of ours across the country – I am well, much better than I had expected to be so far.  In fact, as each leg of the trip ends and we move on to new place, I am a little bit disappointed that it’s ended.  I am trying my best to savor each new experience we get to share with the boys, knowing this is most likely a once in a lifetime opportunity.  Sorry for the length of the post, thanks for reading if you made it all the way here to the end.

father’s day labor of love

After erroneously erasing this slideshow TWICE, it’s finally done.
We love you, Dad! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!!
